How to Get Rid of Carpenter Ants
Carpenter ants are one of the most destructive pests that can infest your home. They don’t eat wood, but they chew through it to create tunnels and nests for their colonies. Over time, this can weaken the structure and cause serious damage. Carpenter ants are also capable of biting humans, though they rarely do so.
If you suspect you have a carpenter ant problem, you need to act fast and take the necessary steps to eliminate them. Here are some tips on how to get rid of carpenter ants effectively and prevent them from coming back.
1. Identify the carpenter ants and their nesting locations. Carpenter ants are usually large (about 1/2″ to 5/8″), black or reddish in color, and may have wings. They prefer moist and decaying damage wood, so look for signs of their activity near water sources, such as sinks, bathtubs, dishwashers, and air-conditioning units as this will create moisture problems. You may also see small holes in the wood surface or piles of wood shavings (called frass) near their nests.
2. Use bait traps to kill the ants and locate the carpenter ant nests. Carpenter ants are attracted to sweet foods, so you can make your own bait with a mix of sugar and boric acid. Boric acid is a natural insecticide that will kill the ants when they ingest it. Place the bait along the ants’ trail or near their nest, and watch where they take it back. This will help you find the main colony and any satellite colonies nearby.
3. Apply insecticide or dust to the nests to destroy them. Once you have located the nests, you can use a spray or dust insecticide that is labeled for carpenter ants. Follow the instructions on the product label and apply it directly to the nest openings or inside the tunnels. You can also use diatomaceous earth, which is a natural substance that dehydrates and kills insects. Be careful not to inhale or ingest any of these products and wear protective gloves and clothing when handling them.
4. Remove any infested wood or repair any moisture damage. If possible, remove any wood that has been damaged by carpenter ants and replace it with new wood. If not, you can seal any holes or cracks with caulk or wood filler to prevent further infestation. You should also fix any leaks or moisture problems that may have attracted the carpenter ants in the first place.
5. Prevent carpenter ants from returning by keeping your home clean and dry. Carpenter ants are opportunistic pests that will take advantage of any food or water sources in your home. To prevent them from coming back, you should:
– Clean up any spills or crumbs on your floors, countertops, and cabinets.
– Store your food in airtight containers or in the refrigerator.
– Dispose of your garbage regularly and keep it in sealed bins.
– Trim any branches or plants that touch your house or roof.
– Seal any gaps or cracks around your doors, windows, pipes, wires, or vents.
– Keep your firewood away from your house and off the ground.
